Tring Chamber Music presents
The brief and passionate opening to Janacek's violin sonata is characteristic of the warmth and intensity of so much Czech music. Like other composers, he turned to the intimacy of chamber music to express deep, often secret feelings. Dvorak wrote his Miniatures and his Piano Quintet in the same year. The former are unjustly forgotten whereas the quintet occupies a lofty place in the chamber music repertoire with its glowing melodies, piquant rhythms and a lyrical quality which is so typical of the Czech chamber music tradition. Martinu's unusual Sonata for Two Violins and Piano adds a crisp, neoclassical and jazzy flavour to a programme which comes straight from the heart.

'English violinist Paul Barritt and pianist James Lisney are not only excellent individually - Barritt with his agile attack, variegated tone, and huge technique and Lisney with his fleet dexterity, nuanced balances, and subtle dynamics - but together their performances are more than the sum of the parts.'
